What this site collects

A short, plain-English notice. Updated 21 September 2026.

I. Who is behind this

This is a small editorial site published privately. It has no employees, no commercial offering, and no business address open to the public. Correspondence is read at info@justinbarrett.ie.

II. What is collected

The site uses a self-hosted instance of Matomo to count page views. Matomo records the URL you visited, an anonymised IP address, the page that referred you, and a coarse description of your browser and device. It does not record your name, your email, or anything you type, except what you choose to send through the suggestion box described below. There is no third-party advertising, no Google Analytics, no Facebook Pixel, and no cross-site tracking.

If you write to the contact email above, the resulting message is stored in a private mailbox and read by the editor.

III. Legal basis and retention

Anonymised analytics are kept for fourteen months and then aggregated, on the legal basis of legitimate interest. Email correspondence is kept for as long as is reasonably useful and then deleted, on the basis that the sender initiated contact. No data is sold, rented, traded, or shared with any third party except where required by law.

IV. Your rights under GDPR

You may ask, by email, what is held about you, ask that it be corrected, ask that it be deleted, ask that it be exported in a portable format, or ask that processing stop. Requests are answered within thirty days. Complaints may be made to the Irish Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie.

V. Cookies

Matomo sets a first-party cookie used only to count unique visits. There are no advertising cookies. You can clear or block site cookies through your browser without affecting access to any content here.

VI. The suggestion box

If you use the suggestion form, the site stores what you type, the optional source link and the optional email address you give, together with the time, your IP address and your browser description. The IP address and browser description are kept only to stop spam and abuse. Only the suggestion itself is required; you do not have to give a name or an email.

Submissions are stored privately on the site’s host and forwarded to the editor’s mailbox. They are never published automatically. Suggestions are kept for up to twelve months and then deleted, on the basis of legitimate interest in maintaining an accurate, sourced reference. Your rights under section IV apply to anything you send.

Better Barretts, better Justins · and one electorate

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnets from the Portuguese, XLIII (1850) · a better Barrett

We counted, too: 10,997 votes in 2004; 183 in 2021.

“Reason directs those who are truly pious and philosophical to honour and love only what is true, declining to follow traditional opinions, if these be worthless.”
Justin Martyr, First Apology, ch. II (c. AD 155), trans. Ante-Nicene Fathers · a better Justin

The name comes from the Latin iustus: just, upright. Some bearers took it seriously.

“183.”
The electorate of Dublin Bay South, by-election, July 2021 (0.68% of first preferences) · the record

Eleventh of fifteen candidates. The electorate has not been asked to elaborate.

“10,997.”
The electorate of the East constituency, European Parliament election, 2004 (2.4%) · the record

Seventeen years later, in Dublin Bay South: 183.

“1.”
In-person attendance at the September 2024 National Party meeting called to remove him · The Irish Times

The Electoral Commission ruled that meeting invalid. A later one was not.

“We have been stood on since 1745. We mention it only for context.”
The steps of Leinster House, in a statement they did not make

That one is fiction, and labelled as such. The November 2023 incident it refers to is not.

Every quotation here is verbatim and in the public domain, or is a figure from the published record. No words have been put in Mr Barrett’s mouth. The one fictional speaker is a flight of steps, and says so.
